Signs of Addiction and Addiction

Signs of Addiction
This is a broad general view of addiction as different substances create different symptoms and effects on the individual and often addiction is to more than one substance. Addiction generally is a condition characterized by repeated, compulsive seeking and use of drugs or alcohol despite adverse social, mental, and physical consequences. It is usually accompanied by physiological and physical dependence with the appearance of withdrawal symptoms when the drug or alcohol is rapidly decreased or terminated. When addiction exists, the drug use controls the individual rather than the individual controlling the usage.

Addiction Side Effects and Addiction

Addiction Side Effects
With most drugs there are short term effect, long term effects and addiction side effects which would actually be long term effects resulting from abusive use of illegal drugs and addiction to prescription drugs that can occur even at what is commonly considered ‘safe’ levels. Anti-depressants are a case in point. Many of these legal medications have serious side effects including increased violent behavior as well as suicidal ideation when taken at prescribed levels, especially in youth. Add in the fact that many of these drugs are taken at abusive non-prescribed levels as well as mixed with other prescription drugs and illegal street drugs. With the current trends in abuse and addiction inpatient medically supervised withdrawal is vital in most cases of addiction treatment.

Drug Patient and Addiction

Drug Patient
At Narconon Arrowhead we do no refer to our participants as ‘patients’ but rather they are considered ‘students’. Using the word ‘patient’ tends to give an erroneous impression of illness and disease, which is not the main thrust of our program. Certainly issues of health and nutrition need to corrected, especially in the withdrawal and detoxification phases of the program. The term student is used as we are educating the individual into the use of the tools and abilities needed to sustain a continuous drug free productive life and to confront and resolve the three main factors behind relapse and continued use. Addiction is not a disease of a lifetime. It can and is being ended on a daily basis here a Narconon Arrowhead.

Side Effects of Addiction and Addiction

Side Effects of Addiction
Each alcohol or drug can and does have its own set of side effects; however there are some side effects that are common to any form of addiction. These can be classed under the broad categories of cravings, guilt and depression. Cravings are the intense feeling of physical or emotion need for more drugs or alcohol. Guilt and depression are the inevitable side effects of all the things the individual has done to hurt or harm himself, his family and loved one, friends, associates, and others in general. These feelings along with cravings make it very difficult for the individual to stay away from drugs or alcohol. As he or she has a very hard time confronting the reality of the harm created, the drugs appear to be the only solution to remove the physical and emotional pain. It is a deadly trap as the drugs are the main contributor to these feelings.
